The ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) Programs offered by the
Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Marine Corps train qualified
young men and women to become officers in those services upon
graduation from college. ROTC is available in over 1,000 colleges and
universities throughout the U. S., both those that host ROTC units or
detachment and those with cross-enrollment agreements with them.

During college, students take a full course load. However, included in the
curriculum are military science courses that provide the specialized
knowledge needed as an officer. In addition to academic courses,
ROTC candidates wear uniforms once a week during military labs, drill,
military science presentations, and other practical training activities.
ROTC summer programs offer a taste of military life -- such as
midshipmen cruises in Naval ROTC -- and round out your military training.

You don't have to have a scholarship to participate in ROTC, but
hundreds of ROTC students receive scholarships every year.
Scholarships are competitively awarded on merit. The main
considerations are high school academic record, SAT or ACT scores,
extracurricular activities, and the personal interview. The length, value,
and terms of ROTC scholarships vary by service. All services offer
four-year scholarships that include full tuition, books, fees, and a monthly
tax-free stipend. However, three-, two-, and even one-year scholarships
are also available, so ask about them. Some services offer
health-related or Nurse ROTC program variations, and one has an
ROTC program at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
